Michael Jackson Thing?
Vitiligo (“vit-ill-EYE-go”) is a disorder in which white patches of skin appear on different parts of the body. This happens because the melanocytes (ma-LAN-o-sites) which make pigment are destroyed. Vitiligo can also affect the mucous membranes (such as the tissue inside the mouth and nose) & the eye.
An Ancient Condition
People with vitiligo now can take comfort that there have been others who came before them.
The medical Elbers Papyrus of 1550 BC mentions 2 de-pigmentation conditions, at least 1 of which is probably vitiligo.
The term goes back to a Roman physician, Aurelius Celsus, in 1 AD.
No one knows.
It could be an auto-immune
disorder since people with hyperthyroidism get it more.
It could be genetic, as children with it are more likely to have parents who also have it, but most children won’t get it.
It could be the melanocytes
It could even be a sunburn
or emotional distress.
Who Gets Vitiligo?
Anyone can get it.
People in their 20’s are more at risk.
All races get it,
but the contrast is more noticeable with black people.
Vitiligo is harmless.
This is “America’s Next Top Model” Chantal Brown-Young, & she has had Vitiligo since she was 4 years old.
She’s from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Emotionally, Vitiligo is Very Challenging
Model Chantelle Young-Brown contemplated suicide because she was teased as a “zebra” or a “cow”. Her sense of ugliness directly contributed to her failure to complete high school.
Fortunately, she came to recognize her condition as a potential asset, & on ANTM was discovered by Tyra Banks.
However, many others are not so lucky.
Often feelings of rejection & ugliness lead to deep depression & suicide.
This is an Ultra-Violet photo of Vitiligo, useful for diagnosis.
Life Goes On
There is no cure for Vitiligo or Michael Jackson -a wealthy entertainer -would have found it. Reputable doctors & dermatologists confirm this, though research to find a cure is ongoing.
